Kyoko Hoshino

I grew up in the heart of town surrounded by craftsmen and liked watching the process of manufacturing from a small age.
After I moved to Nagano, I wanted to create things that combined wooden products with the technology of the Japanese government. These were things I learned while I was a student at Matsumoto Technical College studying in the Wood Crafts Department.
This is how I became interested in the Karakuri box.
I would like to make works that use both wood and cloth.

The Picture-story show
HS-19 This work was designed for an exhibition that theme is gStoryh.

The theme is "story", but I do not want to make it a particular story
work.
I made a work with a picture-story motif as an association of "story".
The story begins, when the cover of the book is opened.
However, the story does not advance if the pages arenft turned.
What kind of story will it turn out to be when the pages begin turning?
The picture was printed with a UV printer.

see a star and think.

HS-16 This work was designed for an exhibition that theme is gSpaceh.

I wanted to make a box that opened while you held it up, instead of looking down at it.
Work is busy every day. On the way home you let out a sigh. You stop and look up at the starry sky. What do you wonder about?

AN-DON
HS-15 This work was designed as a Christmas present for 2015.

An andon was used during the Edo Period to illuminate a room.  It was shaped as a square box which held the four-sided paper lantern inside.  Candles were too expensive so the lanterns were lit with small containers of oil with wicks in them. Earlier models had handles on top and could be carried through the room.  The ari-ake an-don was used as a night light and kept lit with oil all through the night.  You could use it two ways; kept in the small box with a minimal amount of light shining through or pulling the paper lantern all the way up out of the box for brighter illumination of the room.

Mail Box

HS-13 This work was designed as a Christmas present for 2014.

It is very difficult to convey ones feeling in a letter.
Even after completing the letter, you may decide not to actually send it.
If ones true feelings are conveyed even through the distance, surely the receivers heart grows fonder as well.

This work was designed as a Christmas present for 2012.

A long time ago, a Japanese mother and grandma used a traditional Sewing box.
It is one of the shapes I have made before.
It cannot be used as a sewing box since it is as small as your palm.
Although the pincushion can actually be inserted with a needle or pin.
(For opening the mechanism, a needle is not necessary!)

Wrapping Box

HS-3 This work was designed as a Christmas present for 2009.
There are times when a customer opens the karakuri-box only when given a hint at the exhibition. The hints are the movements of the parts, or the sounds when they shake the box for example. What would happen if there were no such hints available? This box was made from such question.
