The theme of this contest is "Karakuri Box".
There were many contest applications from all over Japan.

A few ideas are selected every year.
The craftsmen who are members of the Karakuri Creation Group made the products
that were on display while summer vacation, and guests who visited the exhibition
were the ones who cast their vote for the final prize champions.

The 10th
(2018) Winners

Waku Waku grand prix

乽Memory box乿

This is a new 乬memory type乭 item. There are four buttons on the top. They are the key to the drawer. When you push the buttons in the correct combination, you can open the drawer. However, this key combination can also be reset to a new locking combination. The last combination you used when closing the drawer will become the new combination lock. Using only 4 buttons you can create up to 16 different combination locking codes. This item is interesting and easy to play. Can you imagine the type of mechanism used?

The final product turned out to be gorgeous workmanship I think.
All the wheels are functional and rotate, so you can enjoy playing with them as well.

Astonishment grand prix

乽Dashi乿

This work is in the image of a Japanese traditional device called, "Katsuobushi kezuriki". It is a dried bonito-fish shaver.
Even the blade of the Japanese carpenter's plane is made from wood, yet it looks so realisitc.
How do you shave the Katsuobushi? The solution is slighty difficult.
Katsuobushi (dried bonito) is a part of mechanism.

*Dried bonito shaver (Katsuobushi kezuriki)
This implement, which was originally converted from a carpenter's plane, had a small box in which the blade was positioned upward, and the small box had a drawer from where the shaved katsuobushi pieces were removed.

乽HAKONE乿

This was a bold and unique idea. As the mountain moves the mirror image of Mt. Fuji appears on the surface of the lake.
Therefore, this represents a 3-D model of Hakone or, "Diorama of Hakone".
This product uses many of the same ideas and techniques that I乫ve used in chest making so far.
The final product turned out to be a fun Karakuri box.

Design grand prix乽Palette乿

There are red, blue and yellow paints on a palette. The handles of the three drawers are purple, orange and green. These paints can be moved with the image of mixing colors. You can open each drawer by mixing colors. Well, how do you open the purple drawer? The principle of the mechanism is "combination". The paints and handles were made of wood by using a turning lathe. They were painted to express 乬mixing colors乭 well. Don't they look like wet paints?

Ouch両乿
This foot represents a unique Japanese story.
Japanese people walk around their house without shoes on. So they sometimes hit their pinky toe against the corner of a piece of furniture in the room.
Someone declared, "I want to change the pain to laughter when I hit my foot on the corner of furniture". So the judges and the craftsman decided to make it.
It really hurts, but enjoy the laughter.

Please pay the fee乿

The motif is an ATM money machine (Automated teller machine).
When you use an ATM to make a cash withdrawl, the drawer opens, you take out the money and a service fee is charged. When the drawer is closed, it will lock, and the fee will be removed from your account.
At least one coin is always left inside. This contradiction makes the puzzle fun.
